Motionball under the sun

Hundreds of locals have been raising money for Special Olympics athletes over the past few months, and it all came to a head Saturday in City Park at the eighth annual Motionball Kelowna.

About 400 people filled the downtown park, under very sunny skies for the “marathon of sport,” that includes both traditional and not-so traditional sports.

The massive event sees 30 teams, each with a couple Special Olympic athletes, face off against each other in soccer, street hockey, kickball, volleyball among many other sports, but the goal isn't to win.

“Really it's about raising awareness about who our Special Olympic athletes are across the country,” said Derek Fuhr, event director.

“We try and make it as interactive as possible and we like to make sure that you get out and you enjoy the day with the people you were raising the money for so you can really see the difference that you're making in their lives first hand.”

This year's fundraising total has yet to be tallied, but last year's record-breaking event netted $125,000 for Special Olympics Canada.
