Body may be from accident

Whistler police are exploring the possibility that the body of an individual recovered from Lillooet Lake last week could be that of a man who went missing following a car accident earlier this year.

On Monday, Sept. 9, the Whistler RCMP and BC Coroners Service recovered the body near the 20-kilometre mark of the In-SHUCK-ch Forest Service Road (FSR). At the time, the coroners’ office confirmed that unidentified remains were found, but could not provide any additional information at such an early stage in the investigation.

In a follow-up phone call, Sgt. Rob Knapton with the Whistler RCMP said one possibility being explored is that the body found was that of a man who had gone missing after an April accident that sent a vehicle into the lake.

“That’s one of the things we’re looking into, absolutely,” he said, before adding it could be some time before the deceased’s identity is confirmed.

“With any investigation, there’s common sense and educated guesses, and then there’s actually having proof behind that,” Knapton noted. “In a case like this, if it was an old body found, and it might be that person, it would have to be through DNA and that takes a while.”
