Speed, booze in fatal crash

A 21-year-old woman died in hospital Sept. 12 following a crash along Highway 16 roughly 40 km east of Purden Lake.

At 5:18 p.m., North District RCMP received witness reports of an upside-down single-vehicle in the ditch near Penny Access Road, the cut-off line for the jurisdiction, after it was seen driving erratically and going off the road.

First responders arrived on-scene; a woman from Valemount was airlifted to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

A 41-year-old man was also treated for injuries that were reported to be minor and non-life threatening.

Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said police are considering speed and alcohol as elements that led to the fatal crash, but the incident remains under investigation.

Highway 16 was closed in both directions for roughly four hours as per Drive B.C., but has since re-opened.

Anyone with more information is asked to call the North District RCMP at 250-561-3166.
