Technology first in Canada

Kelowna's Days Century Growers has received the first optical fruit-sorting machinery of its kind in Canada, with the technology coming from Holland.

"In our facility, we usually run about three million pounds of pears per season – small scale compared to some of the larger packing houses out there, but our main focus is keeping a consistent grade," says operations manager Erin Day.

The new technologies include a portal unloader designed by Burg, which dumps bins full of 1,000 pounds of pears into a wet dump, decreasing labour and forklifting. The other new addition is a Van Wamel Uni-Grader, which uses state of the art technology to gently handle and sort the fruit.

"Another really cool aspect is the camera housing. The machine takes 60 pictures of each pear as it rolls by," says Day. This helps properly sort the pears into different size and quality categories.

"All of our employees are very excited. They can see a bright future," says Day. "We're just starting to play with this, it'll take time. It takes a lot of pears, but we're getting there."

In addition to pears, Days Century Growers also produce vegetables and beef cattle for the local and national markets.

You can find their products in Thrifty Foods, Loblaws, Sobeys and Costco.
