55+ BC Games kick off

The 55+ BC Games have kicked off in Kelowna with the highest number of sports and participants in the history of the games.

Registration started today at the Capital News Centre, where more than 4,100 participants signed in.

"The week is very action packed. Sports start tomorrow, and we cap everything off with a closing ceremony on Saturday," said promotions manager Valaura Jones.

With the help of approximately 1,400 volunteers, the event will host 30 different sports ranging from track and field to table tennis, with the first-ever games triathlon.

"I think people can expect to be inspired – you're looking at a lot of people who have only started their sports in relatively recent years," said Jones. "They're killing it, and they are going after it long after they thought that maybe their sporting days were done."

Games president David Graham is pleased with the turnout and the impact it is having.

"Age-wise, you've got people pushing into their 90s, so it's really doing its job of keeping older people active – and that's a benefit not only to the individual, but to the community and the province," said Graham.

In addition, there are significant economic benefits.

"We're hearing all the hotels are full, so there's a clear economic benefit, and our sport community is proving itself, which sets the stage for hosting other major sport events in the future," said Graham.
