Volunteers needed for study

The Okanagan Clinical Trials are searching for people living with mild Alzheimers and type two diabetes to participate in a medical study.

Type two diabetes has been linked to 35 per cent of all people with Alzheimers and the study will determine how effective an investigational medicine is for treating the diseases.

“Memory impairment and Alzheimer’s disease are devastating conditions with very few viable treatment options,” said Dr. Paul Latimer, psychiatrist and principal investigator for Okanagan Clinical Trials.

“With an aging population and numbers on the rise, it is very important to continue searching for safe and effective treatments.”

Alzheimers affects almost 39 million people and is the most common form of dementia with a progressive condition that has no cure.

At first the disease impacts a persons short-term memory with it worsening over time, eventually leading to death.

Usually Alzheimers affects individuals over 65 but some may develop the disease earlier in life.

Eligible volunteers include men and women between 50 and 85 who have type two diabetes and are currently on medication for memory loss.

The Okanagan Clinical Trials have been conducting tests since 1992 and are searching for 300 participants in this study.

The study will take course over 18 months and the treatments will not affect any medical coverage as all study-related costs will be taken care of.

Participants may leave the study at any time if need be.
