UPDATE: 11:25 a.m.

Police have identified the body found near Skaha Marina Wednesday morning as that of a female in her 50s.

Emergency crews responded to the area at 7 a.m. for reports of the body at the shoreline. The woman was found deceased at the scene.

"The General Investigation Section, along with General Duty and the BC Coroners Service are currently investigating. The cause of death is not suspicious. This is not considered a criminal investigation, and out of respect for the family, no further information will be released," said Cst. James Grandy with Penticton RCMP.

UPDATE: 10:05 a.m.

A body was retrieved from the water on the eastern part of Skaha Lake Beach before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. 

An eyewitness who had been sitting on a nearby bench enjoying the sun described the moment the tranquil morning was shattered. 

"I heard somebody scream, and I thought 'Oh, that's just terrible,'" said Kim Cryer. "There's usually swimmers that come every morning, and actually at first I just thought they were looking after somebody."

Next thing she knew, somebody was running back to their car, and others were dragging a body out of the water. Paramedics and police arrived shortly afterward. 

Cryer comes to Skaha Beach many mornings, and has never seen anything like this.

"It's sad. It's sad to see when someone dies," she said, adding she couldn't tell the gender or age of the body.  

The body was retrieved and the police scene cleaned up by shortly after 9 a.m.
