Smoke filled cabin on flight

Passengers on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Oakland, Calif., to Honolulu evacuated down slides on the runway after the aircraft's cabin filled with smoke on Thursday.

The Airbus A321-200N was descending towards Honolulu, about 20 minutes out, when fumes and smoke prompted the crew to don oxygen masks and declare an emergency, aeroinside.com reports.

The crew accelerated the approach and advised the tower they planned to stop on the runway and evacuate.

The aircraft landed safely with with 184 passengers and seven crew on board.

Seven people were taken to hospital with smoke-related symptoms.

The airline reported smoke in the cargo hold and cabin, and determined that a seal in the left engine had failed, permitting oil to leak onto hot parts of the engine and air conditioning system.

The performence of the engine was not affected.
