No bail in attempted murder

A West Kelowna man accused of severely beating an elderly woman will remain behind bars until his trial, after he was denied bail Thursday.

Kevin Lee Barrett, 60, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault after 79-year-old Ellie Holmes was found beaten and left for dead on the Bear Lake Main Forest Service Road on the evening of April 29.

Police said the assault began at the Westview Village mobile home complex where Holmes lived, before she was taken in her own vehicle and dumped on the forestry road. Police said Barrett was well known to the victim.

On Thursday, Barrett applied to be released on bail in Kelowna court, but his application was denied. He's scheduled to appear in court next on Sept. 12, when he will elect to be tried by a jury or a judge alone.

After spending 18 days in hospital recovering, Holmes was released from hospital in mid-May.

A GoFundMe page set up for “Amazing Ellie” has raised almost $7,000 to help with her recovery.
