Vacant home up in flames

Chelsea Powrie

A fire in a vacant farmhouse in Kelowna's Mission district overnight is considered suspicious.

Just after 1 a.m., Kelowna Fire Dispatch received numerous 911 calls reporting the blaze on the 1000 block of Francescutti Court, near Windermere Park.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the second storey windows and roof of the building.

Crews performed a defensive attack from the exterior to knock the fire down before entering and completing the extinguishment.

No one was in the home at the time. Neighbours say the home had been vacant for some years.

Four engines, a command unit, rescue truck and 17 personnel fought the blaze, with assistance from RCMP, paramedics and Fortis Electric crews.

RCMP have taken charge of the scene, says Platoon Capt. Dennis Miller.
