Some cell access restored

UPDATE: 3:38 p.m.

Lumby residents are rejoicing the return of cell service.

There are several online posts from people who can use their cellphones again.

UPDATE: 12:40 p.m.

Lumby residents have been without cell service from most providers for more than 24 hours after an area cell tower lost power.

"Starting yesterday, our cell site in Lumby began experiencing issues and as a result, service to customers in the immediate area has been disrupted," said Liz Sauvé, senior communications manager for Telus.

"A technician is on route with a back-up generator and we anticipate service will be restored to all customers early this evening."

Sauvé said the first priority is to restore service, and then investigate what caused the disruption.

"We want to thank our customers for their patience. We understand how much our customers rely on our wireless services, and we want them to know our priority is to fully restore their service as soon as possible," Sauvé said.

Lumby residents report cellphone service has been out in the North Okanagan community for more than 24 hours.

It's not known what may have caused the outage, but residents report customers with various carriers are being affected.

"Area residents are not able to make or receive phone calls, or text messages. People are relying on their home WiFi to contact people via Facebook Messenger," said one resident.

"But residents without home phone service are worried about if an emergency arises, how they will contact emergency services."

Castanet will reach out to cell phone providers for more details.
