Ruck misses out on medal

Kelowna's Taylor Ruck missed the podium by inches in her first individual final at the 2019 World Aquatic Championships in South Korea.

Ruck finished fourth in today's 100 metre backstroke final.

Her time of 58.96 seconds was just five one hundredths of a second behind bronze medalist Olivia Smoliga of the U.S. and a tenth of a second behind Minna Atherton of Australia. Canadian Kylie Masse won gold, successfully defending her title from the 2017 worlds.

The finish came in the first of what could be four finals for Ruck, who will also compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke, as well as several relay races.

Ruck was scheduled to take part in the 200m freestyle, but was urged to pull out by coaches, who wanted to keep her fresh during her first world championship.

National team coach John Atkinson said Ruck had a busy schedule with four other individual events, which include heats, semis and finals, plus numerous relays.

Ruck won't hit the pool again until heats of the 100m freestyle Thursday morning.
