Ruck taking on the world

Kelowna's Taylor Ruck will look to add to her impressive international medal haul at the World Aquatic Championships in South Korea.

Ruck, born in Kelowna but raised in Arizona, has accumulated 27 medals over five plus international competitions, including the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The 27th was a bronze over the weekend in the women's 4x100 freestyle relay to kick off the pre-Olympic competition.

Ruck was scheduled to compete in five individual events and is expected to hit the pool in several other relays.

She has already qualified for the final in the 100 metre backstroke set for Tuesday night.

Ruck also competes in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke.

She was scheduled to compete in the 200m freestyle, but was scratched from that race.

“It’s her first world championships and she was looking at swimming a very busy program consisting of four individual events which would have heats, semifinals and finals, and potentially four or five relays,” national coach John Atkinson was quoted on the swimming website Swim Swam.

“We have made this decision in consultation with Taylor and her coach Ben Titley at the High Performance Centre – Ontario to protect her performances for the rest of the world championships."

Kelowna's Kierra Smith was eliminated early in her only individual event, failing to qualify in the 100m breaststroke.
