Backhoe burns in field

A backhoe in Okanagan Falls burned “right down to the rims” Sunday evening.

Fire crews were called to the blaze near Allendale Lake Road and Chapman Road at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, for an initial report of a propane tank on fire.

As firefighters nears the scene, fire chief Rob Oliver says a large plume of black smoke indicated it was something larger.

“We got there and it was a backhoe, totally engulfed,” he said.

Crews managed to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to the field the backhoe was sitting in.

No one was operating the machine at the time of the fire, and there was no power running to it. Oliver says it is possible sunlight through the window ignited greasy rags in the cab.

“Total write off, right down to the rims,” he said.
