More renos for Orchard Park

Construction underway at Orchard Park is just part of a larger project for the east side of the Kelowna mall.

With the demise of Sears more than a year ago, mall operators needed to make some changes to accommodate new tenants.

The first phase of construction has already begun, as the mall guts the former Sears space, building in its place space for a new Mark's and two other stores, along with changes to the parking lot.

Those changes are adding more stalls, more landscaping and making the area more pedestrian friendly.

A second application circulating within City Hall calls for similar changes around the former Sears Home Centre.

Planner Andrew Ferguson says the new application is essentially a continuation of what is already going on.

"They are demolishing about 14,600 square feet of building area and taking it back into the mall, so to speak," said Ferguson. "At the same time, they're looking at reconfiguring the parking. Providing an improved connectivity for pedestrians as well as vehicle circulation, adding more trees and landscaped islands to provide more shade."

The parking lot renovation and reconfiguration includes the former pub on the back corner of the property.

It's believed the former home centre will be rebuilt to house about four or five new tenants. There is no word yet on what stores those might be.

Ferguson says it will be a few months before the application makes its way to council chambers.
