Ghoulish cemetery theft

RCMP need the public's help to further their investigation into the theft of multiple bronze memorial plaques from Lakeview Memorial Gardens on Dry Valley Road in Kelowna.

Police discovered that four large bronze memorial plaques honouring over 60 individuals on each, were taken overnight between the hours of 5 p.m. on Wednesday and 7 a.m. on Thursday.

“This theft is very disheartening,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP. “Not only does this crime impact countless families and loved one of those who were memorialized on the specialized plaques. We are told one of those plaques was a war memorial, which honoured the names of dozens of Canadian veterans.”

The suspect or suspects would have had to pry the large bronze plaques, which were also secured with bolts to stone walls. They also would have required a vehicle to transport them from the grounds of the cemetery.

Cpl. O’Donaghey says that Central Okanagan Mounties also want to make a plea to the person responsible, “do the proper thing… turn over the memorial plaques to your nearest police detachment, community policing office or return them.”

Anyone with any information that may assist police in tracking down the stolen plaques or identifying the person or persons responsible for this crime is asked to contact Cst. Marshall Slarks of the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
