Charges after crime spree

A man wanted out of Alberta has been arrested and charged after a suspect stole several vehicles in Sicamous and Kelowna over the weekend.

Sicamous RCMP responded to a theft from an unlocked vehicle on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The vehicles was parked at a church. A suspect was seen leaving in a black Dodge truck with Alberta plates, police said.

RCMP found the truck at a gas station in Sicamous and attempted to stop the driver, but he fled at a high speed onto the Trans Canada Highway eastbound.

"RCMP did not pursue the suspect due to the dangerous manner in which he was observed driving," said Sicamous Detachment Commander Sgt. Murray McNeil in a release.

"At 10:45 a.m. the owner of a campground in Malakwa reported to police that a man had abandoned a black dodge with Alberta plates in his campground. The man was seen running toward the highway while changing his clothes as he ran. Police attended and located a Dodge pick up which had been stolen from Calgary Alberta in June."

Minutes later police were notified that a resident on nearby Luoma road in Malakwa had their Ford F350 stolen from their property, McNeil said. The truck had been idling as the homeowner was loading his truck. This vehicle was later found abandoned on Ward road in Craigellachie. Police began checking nearby homes, at which time a resident discovered their Honda SUV which had been parked in the driveway with the keys in it, was gone.

Then at 6 p.m., Kelowna RCMP observed a man matching the suspect description approaching the stolen Honda in a parking lot on Bernard Avenue. A suspect was arrested and found with the keys for the stolen SUV in addition to several pieces of stolen identification, a recently stolen purse, and fraudulently purchased items.

Shane Schultz, 47, has been charged and held in custody on numerous charges including possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000. Schultz was wanted by the Calgary Police Service for being unlawfully at large at the time of his arrest, McNeil said.
