Petition gets 'big number'

Opponents of a “wet” supportive housing facility in Rutland say they have received more than 14,000 signatures on a petition they intend to deliver to Kelowna city council on Monday.

Audra Boudreau tells Castanet it was a large undertaking – "that's a big number."

Boudreau and a group of volunteers set up a drive-thru petition at Springvalley Middle School parking lot on Sunday.

"I was pretty impressed that more than 14,000 people stepped forward and signed this petition saying very clearly that facilities like this should not be put near schools and high concentrations of seniors."

In spite of being told that council will no longer entertain debate on the issue, Boudreau says she plans to take the petition to council.

"Hopefully some councillor will have the courage to bring a motion to do the right thing
and the other councillors will support that motion on Monday," she said.

The facility on McCurdy Road and Rutland Road North has already been green-lit for construction.

Kelowna city council has given its approval to a 49-unit facility to be run by the Kelowna branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
