Reservists get a raise

Kelowna-Lake Country MP Stephen Fuhr is on board with news Armed Forces reservists across the country are in line for a pay raise.

The raise, which includes those who serve with the Okanagan's BC Dragoons, takes effect in August.

The restructured pay scale applies the same base pay for reserve forces as regular forces receive, plus the elements of the "military factor" that apply to reservists, Fuhr said in a news release.

"The military factor is calculated using three military and two additional elements," said Fuhr.

"The military considerations are: personal limitation and liability, separation, and posting turbulence. The two additional elements are overtime and acting for supervisors without an increase in pay."

Along with the increase, the government is also increasing the country's reserve force by 1,500 members.

"It is essential that we recognize our reserve force fully enables a strong and secure nation. Reservists come from all corners of our community, and include students, civil servants, labourers, business people, academics, and former members of the regular force," said Fuhr.

"By fairly compensating them, we are acknowledging how important their service is to the success of the Canadian Armed Forces, our communities, and our country.  Whether it’s fighting local fires and floods or carrying out peace keeping missions around the world our reservists add big value to the fight."
