OKIB celebrates heritage

Like their ancestors have done for millennia, members of the Okanagan Indian Band will be paddling the waters of Okanagan Lake Friday.

Band members will be paddling canoes from Kin Beach in Vernon to Komasket Park in Westside Road as part of the celebrations of Sqilxw Day, the OKIB celebration of National Indigenous Day.

Some 30 paddlers will leave Kin Beach at 8:30 a.m. and are expected to arrive at Komasket Park at 10:30 a.m. where they will join in on a wealth of activities.

The park is located near the 11 km mark on Westside Road.

There will events and activities throughout the day, including traditional stories by Madeline Terbasket, the comedic stylings of the Bannock Brothers and a performance by Corinne Dereckson, one of the few female eagle dancers in the world.

There will also be a variety of games throughout the day.
