Shark fin ban to become law

A federal bill banning the import and export of shark fins in Canada has cleared the Senate and is on the way to becoming law.

CTV News reports the federal Liberals’ overhaul of the Fisheries Act was approved Tuesday and is moving to receive royal assent.

The City of Vancouver was a vocal supporter of the ban, with a handful of restaurants in the city selling shark fin soup. Vancouver council formally endorsed the ban in May.

"Sharks are so integral to our ecosystem and marine life, so they are threatened with extinction due to the amount of shark finning activity that happens," Coun. Sarah Kirby-Young told CTV News Vancouver at the time.

Shark finning sees fins cut off the live animal, which is tossed back into the water to die.
