Magic! concert cancelled

A concert at Kelowna's Island Stage in Waterfront Park has been cancelled with just two days notice, and those with tickets may have a tough time getting a refund.

Magic!, a reggae-pop group out of Toronto, was set to perform Friday, along with opening acts The Boom Booms and The Steadies.

Wednesday afternoon, promoter Brandon Cochran said based on low ticket sales, they were forced to cancel the show.

Cochrane said they'll be refunding tickets for those who live out of town, but locals' tickets will instead be honoured at a future Island Stage concert put on by Cochran. He said if they're able to recoup some of their expenses, they may be able to offer refunds to all.

“We're trying to gather deposits we've placed on all the services that need to be utilized to put on a show of this size, so if we get our deposits, we'll be able to refund everybody's tickets,” he said.

“We just don't have everybody's money in our account right now, because a lot of it did go out for deposits. It'll be up to all the other companies and their policies, and we're going to try our best.”

Cochran's promotion company Rock District put on the Bahamas and Yukon Blonde concert at Island Stage last summer.

Magic! blew up with their hit 2013 song Rude, which has more than 1.6 billion views on YouTube. Unfortunately, that didn't translate into ticket sales in Kelowna.

“To not even be able to draw 1,000 people, it's crazy, we're shocked,” Cochran said.

“It would have been a great night. It's sad that Kelowna couldn't get behind Magic!, and the opening acts were going to be amazing, too.”
