Cops help take a load off

Alanna Kelly

Concerned drivers called police Tuesday after spotting a man walking along Highway 97, pulling two suitcases.

Vehicles can be seen whizzing by the man on the highway near Princeton Avenue in Peachland just after 5 p.m.

Video taken by a nearby resident shows a police cruiser driving up behind the man, and things take an unexpected turn.

“The officer learned that the man was walking back home to the South Okanagan after having moved temporarily to the Central Okanagan,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

Two officers can be seen speaking to the man, who would have had quite the workout pulling the suitcases in 26-degree temperatures.

An officer can be seen opening his trunk, and out of concern for the man’s safety, offered him a ride to Penticton.

"Our emergency first responders are human beings, too," said O’Donaghey.

“Hopefully, the gentleman will remember this as a positive experience and provide a good story to tell his friends and family for years to come."

There has been no bus service in the Okanagan south of West Kelowna since Greyhound pulled out of B.C.
