Teneycke can't find lawyer

Okanagan dangerous offender Ronald Teneycke, 55, is having trouble finding a lawyer to represent him.

He is facing charges of breaching a no-contact order with a man he shot. Teneycke is accused of mailing a letter from behind bars to Wayne Belleville, shot during Teneycke's last crime spree.

But during his appearance in Penticton court Wednesday morning regarding the charge, Teneycke told the judge he couldn't find a lawyer.

"I've been working with legal aid almost every day now, and they've exhausted Penticton, they can't get me a lawyer from Penticton nor Kelowna," Teneycke said via video conference from custody. "Maybe the court can appoint a lawyer?"

The judge told Teneycke he would need to make a Rowbotham application, for those facing serious charges who have been denied legal aid but can't afford a lawyer. A successful application would allow the judge to appoint a free lawyer.

The matter was adjourned for two weeks until July 3 to allow Teneycke more time to find counsel.

Teneycke was given an indefinite sentence in March 2018 because of his "35-year record of committing violent criminal offences,” the judge said at the time.
