Would you buy electric car?

Chelsea Powrie

A recent BC Hydro survey found that a lot of British Columbians are wary about electric cars.

Castanet hit the streets of the Okanagan to ask whether you would purchase one, and why or why not.

"I would actually, if I just had to stay in town. But if I had to go down to the coast there's no way I would have an electric car," said one man.

Some voiced approval of the idea based on the vehicles' greenness.

"I don't have one, but I'd like one," one woman said. "It's better for the environment, I think it's the way of the future. I think it's important, people need to start thinking about it."

Others agreed in theory, but pointed to high prices as a detriment.

"I think the price of them will come down, if people start purchasing them I think it's going to get competitive and the prices of the electric cars will come down because it's extremely expensive right now," a woman explained.

Some pointed to concerns over the number of charging stations available.

"If everybody's got an electric car, where do we charge them? I don't think there's enough electricity for everyone," a man said.

"I would [get one], but where we live, it's just not an option because there really aren't charging stations," said a woman from a rural area.

Others said charge times would need to come down before they would consider a switch.

"They have to make it so they can charge up quicker than 20 minutes, and I don't know how they're going to do it, because it just won't work otherwise," a man explained.
