Thanks to Fairfield vets

Yesterday I was out hiking my two dogs on Kelowna Mountain, just past the dog beach on Lakeshore.

My male puppy, Biggie, was sniffing some in some rocks directly on the trail when I heard him let out a loud welp. He immediately ran away, with his nose dripping blood.

As I approached the rocks where he had been sniffing, I heard a loud rattling noise and instantly knew he had been bitten by a rattlesnake. My boyfriend and I grabbed Biggie and his sister Mya, and took Biggie directly to Fairfield Emergency Animal Hospital.

Lucky for us, Fairfield is the only veterinary hospital in the Interior that has antivenin in its supplies. We were able to have the antivenin administered to Biggie within an hour of him being bitten.

A nurse at Fairfield said that in most cases as long as the dog is relatively healthy and receives the antivenin within four to six hours of being bitten, they typically make a full recovery.

I want all dog owners to know the places dogs have been bitten so far this year so they can be careful with their own fur babies. Fairfield Animal Hospital has seen a large increase in bites this year compared to previous.
