'Pink tax' called out at MEC

Mountain Equipment Co-op has revised its prices for “head thingys” after a wave of online criticism.

CTV News reports MEC was selling the cloth headbands for $30 for men and $35 for women, despite being identical apart from colour.

MEC responded to heavy online criticism and pulled the products from its site, blaming the discrepancy on the supplier.

"When a vendor of ours has a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policy, we must comply," it told CTV News, adding it had spoken with the vendor and will be relisting them both for $30.

"We do our best to catch any price discrepancies and negotiate on behalf of our members before we commit to buying the product. We missed catching the pricing discrepancies in this case," merchandising head Kelly Gorder told CTV News in a statement.

Consumers have been drawing increasing attention recently to gender-based pricing, or the “pink tax.” Studies suggest women pay $1,300 more than men a year for the same products.
