Shelter 'out of control'

Nanaimo residents say a supportive housing project for the homeless is creating problems.

"It's twice as bad as what I thought it would be," neighbour Fred MacDonald told CTV News.

A fire in April destroyed three housing units, and crime is on the rise in the area.

Nanaimo Fire Department documents obtained under the Access to Information Act suggest residents have been tampering with or removing fire equipment and smoke detectors.

MacDonald says he was shocked and disgusted by the reports and that the operators "have absolutely no control over their clientele."

"Island Crisis Care Society and Pacifica Housing staff have worked hard to ensure that fire safety concerns have been addressed at the supportive housing buildings," BC Housing responded.

"This is probably some of the most stable housing they have had in some time," Nanaimo Fire Chief Karen Fry told CTV. "Getting used to what the rules and requirements are for them to live in this facility has been a bit of a challenge."
