Clean water is hard work

A lot of work goes in to making sure Greater Vernon residents have clean, safe drinking water.

"We collect at least 200 samples of water a month to make sure our water is safe," said Zee Marcolin, utilities general manager for the Regional District of North Okanagan.

Since 2003, $106 million has been spent on water infrastructure, with $82 million coming from ratepayers and $24 million from senior government grants.

The work has included UV and chlorine systems at the Mission Hill treatment plant, dissolved air flotation treatment at the Duteau plant, pump station upgrades and separation of irrigation use from domestic lines.

The RDNO is inviting the public to look under the hood of the new water treatment facility in Lavington on June 25.

Tours of the new UV disinfection facility and the Duteau Creek Water Treatment Plant will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
