Trees come crashing down

A Kelowna couple had a close call during the storm Friday night when several trees came crashing down, narrowly missing their mobile home in Southeast Kelowna.

Susan Morrow said the wind and thunder picked up at their mobile home park on Jaud Road at about 4 p.m., and about seven large trees were blown over.

“The biggest tree, must have had a three-foot root on it, and it literally lifted right up and it's actually still sitting on our pine tree and partly on our deck," Morrow said. "It's about 100 feet in the air and leaning over our neighbour's trailer.”

One of the partially fallen trees was leaning over their home for hours, until another wind gust came through at about 7:30 p.m., knocking it down just beside the Morrows' trailer.

“My husband started running and he jumped on top of me and the tree literally fell right on the other side of the house,” Morrow said. “What a lucky break, we thought it was coming to split (our home) right down.”

“At least I know he's going to save my life ... it was very romantic,” Morrow said with a laugh.

The fire department assessed the damage Friday night and Morrow said it was recommended they leave, due to the trees that are still leaning.

“When that main tree fell over, we decided that we feel pretty good now,” Morrow said. “We don't really have any trees left.”

The Morrows have only lived in the area for about a year, but she said neighbours have said trees have come down in the trailer park in the past.
