Pot applications wanted

The City of Kelowna, in fact the entire Okanagan, has yet to see a legal cannabis store open to the public.

But, that isn't stopping the city from beginning a second round of applications.

The city received 35 rezoning applications during the first round of intake late last year. Of those, 15 were accepted to move through the process.

Seven applications have received the necessary council approval, two are in the adoption stage and six others remain instream.

With the initial application process nearly complete at the city level, the planning department is now taking applications on a first-com first-served basis.

Those who were unsuccessful the first time also have the opportunity to reapply by submitting a text amendment and rezoning application.

The text amendment is needed for applications located within 500 metres of another retail cannabis store.

The seven approved applications have been forwarded to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch for provincial approval.

That process has been dragging on at a snail's pace. Nearly 500 applications provincewide have come in, however, only 26 have been approved.
