Skaha Marina open again

The Skaha Marina opened its doors for the season this weekend after upgrades and under new ownership, with strong hopes of starting a new era for the marina after a turbulent few years.

"We've got new owners here, the Gallagher family, they've taken over," said one of the managers, Nikki Morris. "What we're trying to do is get back to basics, get back to the consistency and rebuild the relationships that have been damaged of the last few years with a multitude of owners."

The Gallaghers are local, and operate the Wibit floating water parks throughout the Okanagan. They have a two-year lease on the marina with a one-year option after.

Upgrades to the marina include a fresh patio and exterior, as well as a re-vamped retail and cafe space inside.

"Just this week we signed a new contract with Fergie from Nest and Nectar, she's going to be running our cafe, the 'Nauty Dog,' Nautical Dog," Morris said. "So we're going to be doing breakfast and lunch, gourmet, absolutely delicious stuff."

The marina kicked off their grand opening with an event Friday night featuring a display of water rescue skills from the Penticton Fire Department.

The boat launches have also been upgraded, and some slips are still available. But the star of the show at Saturday's open house was the sunny patio right on the water.

"The patio is looking amazing, we've had people coming in the last couple weeks going 'Are you open? Are you open yet?'" Morris said with a laugh. "Everyone's been really excited and supportive.

The marina's cafe is still under construction, but they hope to be up and running soon.
