Youth brandishing weapon

A 17-year-old male has been arrested after a weekend dispute at the Whalley Athletic Park.

The youth who has not been named has been charged with possession of a loaded firearm after the incident on April 21, just before 7 p.m.

Staff at a local shelter in the 10600 block of 135A Street, reported a shouting match and suspicious activity outside the shelter. Police were called and advised that one of the people involved may have been armed with a firearm.

The youth made a run for it when police arrived. He was arrested after a brief chase and found to be in possession of a 9mm handgun.

The youth is now facing a number of charges including: possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; carrying a concealed weapon; unauthorized possession of a firearm; possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition; and resisting / obstructing a peace officer.

“This investigation is an example of how important it is for the public to report suspicious activity to police.” said Superintendent Ed Boetcher, Operations Officer “This was also great work by our Frontline Officers who made this arrest of an armed suspect, without any injuries to the public or the youth involved.”
