ORIGINAL: 10 a.m.

Rescue crews are searching for two missing kayakers who did not return from a trip near Lasqueti Island.

Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was notified at 10 p.m. on Monday about the two missing people.

Weather overnight hampered search efforts in the search area with low visibility, high winds, and waves.

Conditions are improving on Tuesday morning with calm seas and improving visibility as morning mist on the water dissipates.

“Currently, the search area encompasses the Malaspina Strait and the Sabine Channel off Lasqueti and Texada Islands,” said a JRCC spokesperson.

The JRCC says the kayakers were last seen in a blue 15-foot sea kayak and an 18-foot red and white ocean kayak.

A Royal Canadian Air Force Cormorant Helicopter, a Buffalo Aircraft out of Canadian Forces Base Comox, and multiple Canadian Coast Guard shops all joined in the search.

A notice was issued to mariners in the search area asking people to be on the lookout for the two missing individuals.
This is a developing story and updates will be added as things evolve.
