Potential disaster averted

An unknown passerby averted potential disaster Sunday after a fire was set in a downtown alley.

Witnesses tell Castanet the fire was deliberately set in a garbage can and was spreading to the side of the building that houses Furmanek Jewellers and The Scarlet Studio at the intersection of 30th Avenue and 31st Street.

Lindsay James told Castanet a passerby stopped and put out the fire.

“They lit a dumpster on fire and it was starting to go up the building and apparently there was some one who stopped and put the fire out,” said James.

On Monday morning a pile of burned and melted debris, including a garbage can, wood pallet and mail box were still at the scene.

The siding of the building was melted from the heat of the flames.

“They don't know who started the fire or who put it out,” said James adding she is hoping someone saw something or has surveillance video of the incident.

“I'm hoping to find out who the gentleman was who pulled his car over and put out the fire. I would love to thank him,” she said.
