CF-18 Hornet drops in

Alanna Kelly

It’s not a sight you see every day in Kelowna.

A CF-18 Hornet touched down at Kelowna International Airport on Friday and a group of onlookers were mesmerized by the aircraft.

Kelowna resident Sheldon Dent said he was driving by the airport when he heard the jet.

“I heard a jet take off and I turn around and it is a CF-18 leaving the airport,” said Dent.

A group of people were standing in their truck beds to take photographs and videos of the jet.

“It took off out of the airport and immediately took a hard left and did a circle, I expected it was leaving, but it came right back. It was only up in the air for two minutes and then came down,” said Dent.

Kelowna-Lake Country MP and retired Canadian Forces pilot Stephen Fuhr says the jet is likely from Cold Lake, Alta.

“Given the way it’s configured I would guess it’s on a student or staff training mission,” said Fuhr.

He notes that Kelowna is a good place for training because of the mountainous terrain and the long runway at YLW.
