Distracted driver slams car

UPDATE: 5 p.m.

Police officers believe a distraction inside a vehicle contributed to the driver of a Dodge Durango rear-ending a stopped vehicle on Thursday in West Kelowna.

West Kelowna RCMP responded to a collision on Shannon Lake Road just before 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Witnesses at the scene said the driver of a grey Mazda MX-3 was stopped, waiting to turn left, when the driver was struck from behind by a brown Dodge Durango.

“Information gathered and physical indicators at the scene suggest that there may have been little to no braking prior to the rear-end collision,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

Non-life threatening injuries were suffered by the female driver of the grey Mazda, but a friend of hers tells Castanet she has whiplash.

“The driver of the Dodge Durango was charged under the Provincial Motor Vehicle Act for allegedly following too close,” said O’Donaghey.

Investigators believe a distraction inside the vehicle may have played a role, but police do not believe it was as a result of using an electronic device.

The incident unfolded about 8:30 a.m. Thursday on Shannon Lake Road near Asquith Road in West Kelowna.

According to a friend of the injured woman, the driver of the Mazda was at a complete stop when she was hit.
