A Kelowna RCMP officer was injured while trying to apprehend a man who was acting erratically during an emergency roadside medical call.
The incident happened just before 6 p.m. Wednesday when RCMP responded to assist fire and emergency crews working in the Glenmore Road and Watson Road area.
When police arrived, they were told the man who had been receiving medical attention fled on foot into traffic.
Officers managed to apprehend the man, but while he was receiving further medical treatment, he bolted again, this time into a gated community.
Reinforcements were called in to help with the search, and once the man was located, it took several officers to subdue him. Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says during the incident, one of the officers was injured.
“Several of our Kelowna RCMP officers sustained minor injuries, while one of our regular members required further medical treatment in hospital,” says O’Donaghey. “This incident serves as a reminder of how each and every day, police officers place themselves at risk to protect the communities they serve.”
The injured officer is expected to make a full recovery.
