Vancouver is Canada's most expensive rental market, but things appear to be getting out of hand for some.

Craigslist ads show closets being rented out as accommodation for $600 to $700 a month, CTV News reports.

While listed as "dens," it's clear from photographs that the rentals are actually walk-in closets.

Housing advocate Rohana Rezel says the listings are dangerous and inhumane.

“The people don't even have space to get out of the bed,” said Rezel. “If there were to be a fire in one of those buildings, the people sleeping in those rooms are going to be trapped.”

“These are not dens, they are closets” Vancouver Coun. Melissa De Genova told CTV.

Such rentals may not be legal, but the city is mindful of pushing more people out onto the street.

If tenants are concerned about the safety of their unit, they are urged to complain to the city.
