30 dead geese in swamp

Conservation officers in Pitt Meadows are searching for suspects after 30 dead geese were discovered in a swamp with their breast meat removed.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says the carcasses were found near a boat launch at Pitt Lake.

Officer Marc Plamondon says hunters are allowed to shoot the birds during open hunting season, but dumping the carcasses is not permitted.

He says a month-long open season wrapped up on Sunday and the possession limit for geese is 30.

Removing the breast meat makes it a lawful harvest if the individual had a hunting licence, but dumping the dead birds is illegal and the person responsible could face a fine.

An investigation into the incident is underway and witnesses are asked to call the Conservation Service.
