Park to honour slain cop

A community drive is underway to name a playground after a police officer killed when her cruiser was broadsided by a speeding pickup driven by a drunk driver.

West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett was killed in April 2016.

The West Shore Rotary Club is hoping to raise $250,000 for the playground, CTV News reports.

Beckett's husband, Brad Aschenbrenner, says Sarah and their two children played at a similar park not long before her death.

"We will be able to reconnect with those memories,” Aschenbrenner told CTV. “It’s making something positive out of some so negative."

The City of Langford has promised land for the playground, which could open as soon as late August.
