The science of writing

Who better to help launch a writing program than an acclaimed writer.

Drew Hayden Taylor will help the Okanagan Science Centre launch “Writing the Future,” a program aimed at middle school students that teaches science through writing science fiction.

Local science fiction writer James Love and resident Okanagan Science Centre scientist Carson Albrecht will be teaching the workshop.

On Friday, March 1, 700 Vernon students will get a chance to hear Taylor speak at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre at the launch of the OSC program.

The Okanagan Science Centre, School District 22, and the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre partnered to bring Taylor to Vernon.

Taylor is an indigenous author who has written numerous books and plays, including Take Me to Your Chief, a collection of science fiction stories re-imagined through an aboriginal perspective.

Taylor will be giving three talks while in Vernon. Feb. 28, he will be speaking to area high school students at Seaton High School.

Friday morning March 1, he will be speaking to grades 6 – 9 at the launch of Writing the Future, and that evening he will be giving a public talk at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre.

Tickets available for his public talk through Ticket Seller.

“We are very excited to bring a writer of Mr. Taylor’s caliber to Vernon. And what a wonderful way to launch our new “Writing the Future” program,” said Jim Swingle, Executive Director of the Okanagan Science Centre.
