Gay travel vlogger visits

What’s it like to be LGBTQ in a small town?

Vancouver-based travel vlogger Josh Rimer travelled to Penticton this month to find out.

The online influencer boasts more than 33,000 subscribers on YouTube and will represent Canada at the Mr. Gay World competition in South Africa later this year.

Destination B.C. and Travel Penticton joined forces to bring Rimer to the city, showing off winter activities like snowshoeing, fat biking, skiing as well as numerous restaurants and wineries.

“When it comes to their LGBTQ community, I learned that Penticton really is making efforts to bring more awareness and inclusiveness with pride flags displayed high over the city streets, outside city hall, and even at a school,” Rimer said on his website.

During his visit, Rimer spoke with South Okanagan Pride Society president Karen Davy about LGBTQ life in a small town.

“It is challenging, exciting and really rewarding all at the same time,” she told him. “In the last five to seven years it has been really open and accepting.”

While there is no annual Pride festival or parade in Penticton, Davy announced their society is planning a first-ever “Fruit Float” on the Channel this summer.

The full nine-minute episode is now available for viewing on YouTube. A three-minute version will be airing nationally on OUTtv.
