Cold Case: Can you help?

The family of a man who was killed in 2016 are reaching out to residents of Kelowna to help solve the cold case on the anniversary of the man's death.

William John Patterson, 37, was found suffering gunshot wounds inside his Edmonton home near Chappelle Drive on Feb. 21, 2016. He later died in hospital.

“We are still hoping for some resolution, it is unsolved and the trail has gone cold,” said Scott Heaps.

There have been no leads or charges laid in the case.

It has been three years to the day, and his former father-in-law visits his memorial bench at Kelowna's Cedar Creek Dog Park every year on this day and on his birthday.

Today he will spend some time visiting the spot that overlooks Okanagan Lake and he'll leave a single lily on the bench.

“He spent a lot of time here, he had a lot of friends here,” he said. “I am hoping for anything.”

Patterson lived in Kelowna from about 2000 to 2013.

“John said the best time of his life was his time he spent in Kelowna,” said Heaps.

The family placed Patterson’s ashes into Okanagan Lake in the summer of 2016.

A $40,000 reward was posted by Edmonton Police last year for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible for killing Patterson.

Investigators identified two vehicles of interest that were in the area at the time of the homicide.

“The first vehicle of interest is believed to be an older, white Mazda3  with a sunroof and distinct Continental ContiSportContact 5 SSR tires,” says the release. The second vehicle of interest is believed to be a dark-coloured, Chevrolet Malibu.”

The Malibu came into the Chapelle area and picked up a male from a home which was under construction at the time.

Police said this man was a person of interest in the investigation, but no one identified him.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or submit your tip online and mention file number 16-27755.
