City getting new bus shelters

Penticton will be getting new bus-stop benches and shelters under a deal approved Tuesday by council.

Pattison Outdoor Advertising has been awarded a 15-year contract to install, maintain and sell advertising on bus stops around the city.

The deal will see the company replace all 51 ad benches in the community and install 15 new shelters, replacing the existing 11. In return, the company will keep all advertising revenue until years 11 to 15 when $30,000 per year will be shared with the city.

Public works manager Len Robson says the deal will save the city nearly $1.9 million over the 15 years through saving in replacement of the infrastructure and maintenance. The city currently pays a contractor to clean and maintain transit stops.

City staff will still need to handle the garbage and snow removal at all 256 transit stops in Penticton.
