Tear gas in police takedown

Tear gas was deployed as police defused a dangerous situation in Kamloops early Sunday.

The Emergency Response Team was first called in after police responded to a possible domestic just before 8 p.m. Saturday on the 2000 block of Robson Place.

Upon police arrival, a male exited the residence with a handgun, says Staff Sgt. Edward Preto.

When challenged, the man went back inside, closed the door and refused to surrender to police, despite negotiations by telephone.

The Emergency Response Team successfully took the 59-year-old man into custody in the early hours of Sunday after tear gas was deployed.

Police recovered several air pistols from the home.

The investigation continues, and the scene has been released, says Preto.
