Blatant daytime theft

An Apex Mountain resident caught a thief on camera this weekend stealing gas in a large jerry can kept by their garage.

Jessica Florek was at home with her young kids when her husband contacted her to ask who had been at the home. Their new security camera system showed an unusual car in the driveway. Florek checked the footage, and saw a stranger.

"He came up kind of in front of our car port for a few minutes," Florek said. "My husband just filled up his giant jerry can of gas and the guy literally pulled into the driveway when we still had three other vehicles there and took it."

She notified police, and heard from neighbours that they’d seen a person matching the description loitering near their homes.

"People started commenting saying 'Oh my god, he was just knocking at my door,'" Florek said. "Someone was like 'He pulled into my driveway last night.' So obviously he's just making his rounds."

She said the daytime theft was shocking, given that she and her kids were at home.

"As soon as I posted it, my husband had so many calls from friends, I had three friends stop by today and make sure we're okay and just kind of hang out, because it's just me and I have three kids," Florek said.

The light-coloured SUV had a cargo carrier strapped backwards on its top. Anyone with information about the theft can contact South Okanagan RCMP at 250 492 4300.
