Oscars bosses back off

Oscars bosses have scrapped plans to present four awards during commercial breaks following backlash from Hollywood.

Quentin Tarantino, Russell Crowe, George Clooney, Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo Del Toro were among the big names who challenged the time-saving decision made by officials at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences to hand out the prizes for Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Live Action Short, and Best Make-up and Hairstyling while TV viewers watching the big show where checking out ads.

And it appears the Oscars chiefs were listening.

The Academy bosses have opted to reverse plans to award the four categories off-air, and now the winners will be announced and awarded during the live telecast on Feb. 24.

The move comes a day after Motion Picture Editors Guild president Alan Heim asked Academy chiefs to reverse the decision.

"In its mandate to shorten the Academy Awards' telecast, the Academy has insulted all of us who work 'below the line'. Many of our members and those of other IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) Locals are understandably upset," he wrote in an email.

"There is much outcry for the Academy to reverse its decision, and the Motion Picture Editors Guild joins those voices. If it does not reverse its decision, let us all do everything we can to see that this demeaning experiment will not be repeated."

Tarantino, Cuaron, Clooney, Brad Pitt and Martin Scorsese also demanded the decision be reversed in an open letter which was sent to the Academy.

Meanwhile, Roma director Cuaron also released a statement, challenging the decision to present the awards for cinematography and editing during ad breaks. It read: "In the history of CINEMA, masterpieces have existed without sound, without color, without a story, without actors and without music. No one single film has ever existed without CINEMAtography and without editing."
