Anchor find historic?

A diver's discovery off Quadra Island could be of historical significance.

Richard Hamer of Campbell River spotted an old anchor on the bottom this week, near an abandoned wharf, and pulled it to the surface on Thursday.

"Right away I thought this anchor has got to be old. It’s definitely not something I’ve seen, and the way it's sitting in the mud, it looks to me like it had been lost," Hamer told CTV News.

He also found bottles dating back to 1907 and an English dinner plate.

Naval historian Michael Layland says the anchor is likely from an English vessel, possibly dating back to Captain George Vancouver's voyages of discovery on the B.C. Coast.

"Finding an anchor like that, an artifact as old as that doesn’t happen every day," Layland told CTV.
