Construction booms

The banging of hammers and buzz of saws can be heard throughout Vernon.

Building permit values reached $148.9 million in 2018, up 14 per cent over 2017, the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce reports.

"It was one of our strongest years," says economic development manager Kevin Poole.

Permits have been increasing steadily over the past four years, and are up 35 per cent from 2015. The 2018 increase is largely due to residential development, specifically a 73 per cent increase in new multi-family dwellings. New single-family development remains strong, accounting for $50.6 million in building permit value.

"It's very encouraging in terms of our growth," Coun, Brian Quiring said Monday.

And more development is expected – particularly an industrial area at 5012 Silver Star Rd.

"The application needs to go to advisory planning commission for some variances on setbacks and parking. We are hoping to get it to council Feb 25," said Poole.
